BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · ETHEREUM

EIP-4844 Blobs Are Temporary Data. They Are Not a Storage Layer.

Blob transactions give rollups a cheaper place to post data. The protocol promises availability for a window, then prunes the blobs. Anything that must be kept has to be kept somewhere else.

01

What happened

EIP-4844 added blob-carrying transactions. The bytes sit on the consensus layer long enough to be fetched, and are then discarded. The promise is availability during that window, not permanent storage and not execution of the blob.

That is why posting data became cheaper. It is also why a blob is the wrong place for a document you need in a dispute next year.

02

Why it matters

A registry or a proof of publication that only lives in a blob has confused a bus with an archive. If the dispute is the product, the bytes need a store that still has them when the dispute starts.

03

The operating layer

Write the retention down: where history lives after pruning, who operates that store, and how a third party fetches it. Use blobs to publish. Use a contract with a retention duty to remember.

Do not tell a counterparty the chain remembers a file it was built to forget.

04

What is verified

EIP-4844 is a final Ethereum improvement proposal and is on mainnet. Client retention details belong to current client docs, not to a brochure.

05

What remains unclear

Whether your verifier actually fetched the blob before it disappeared.

06

The catch

Cheaper data is not durable data. The proposal exists so that not every byte is priced as if it were permanent.

Not a fee forecast.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01Where history lives after the window.
  2. 02Who is obliged to store it.
  3. 03What the product tells a user about retention.

BOTTOM LINE

Use blobs to publish. Use an archive to remember.
