BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · TOKENISATION

A Ledger Does Not Replace Reconciliation. It Adds a Feed.

On-chain transfers are a new statement. Banks, custodians, funds and internal books still exist. An operation matches them. A screen with one balance has postponed the work.

All briefings

01

What happened

Payouts, tokenised funds and custody each have at least two records. The chain says a transfer happened. A bank, a transfer agent or an internal ledger says what the organisation believes it owes. Timing, fees, freezes and errors pull them apart.

Software can propose the match. It cannot delete the second record.

02

Why it matters

The alert that matters is a break: chain without bank, bank without chain, amount mismatch, unknown address, stale price. A block explorer is not a subledger.

03

The operating layer

Define match keys, an ageing rule, and who may clear a break with a reason. Keep the cleared item. If you cannot export the report, you do not have the operation.

Label a synthetic demo as one feed so it is not mistaken for the report.

04

What is verified

This is operating practice. Double-entry did not become optional when the database became replicated. The Bank for International Settlements’ work on payment systems still assumes more than one institution’s books.

05

What remains unclear

Which flows have no second feed. How old a break may get. Whether weekend token movements are in the Monday file.

06

The catch

The ledger is the source of truth is sometimes true of one question and false of the question finance is asking. Say which question. Reconcile the rest.

A demo is not a pilot.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01The two records in each flow.
  2. 02How long a break may age.
  3. 03The export an auditor can take.

BOTTOM LINE

Keep the break report. Programmability does not balance the books.
