BLOCKCHAIN LAB BRIEFING · SECURITY

An Upgradeable Proxy Means the Rules Can Change. Read the Admin, Not Only the ABI.

Proxy patterns let an administrator replace the logic contract. Storage stays. Behaviour does not. A user who read last month’s code may not be in that system anymore.

All briefings

01

What happened

The common proxy stores state at one address and delegates calls to an implementation another address can replace. The pattern is how teams ship bug fixes. It is also how a team, or an attacker who takes the admin, replaces a withdrawal function.

Immutable code is a different product. It cannot be fixed quickly. The choice should be stated, not implied.

02

Why it matters

An integration that pins an ABI on day one and never watches the implementation slot will miss the only change that matters. The address did not change. The programme did.

03

The operating layer

Record the proxy, the current implementation, the admin, and whether a timelock or a vote must precede an upgrade. Alert on a change. If you cannot monitor it, do not describe the contract as fixed.

Prefer a documented upgrade policy over a hidden owner.

04

What is verified

OpenZeppelin publishes the proxy patterns in wide use. Whether a given system uses them is a deployment fact.

05

What remains unclear

Who holds the admin this week. The notice period. What your product does when the implementation changes.

06

The catch

Upgradability is not a moral failing. Silence about it is. A user who wanted immutable rules and received an admin key was sold a different instrument.

Not an audit of any proxy.

WATCH

What builders should watch

  1. 01Proxy, implementation, and admin.
  2. 02The delay before an upgrade lands.
  3. 03The alert when the implementation changes.

BOTTOM LINE

If the logic can be replaced, the document you read is a version. Track the version.
